Municipal Building Project

Greater Dandenong’s new civic and community complex is a flagship project for central Dandenong and will form the new heart of Melbourne’s south-east region. Council’s investment in this project complements significant public and private investment in the revitalisation of central Dandenong.

The new facility includes:

  • Regional library, reception and customer service
  • Civic square/community gathering space
  • Community/business meeting spaces
  • Café / bookshop
  • Civic offices
  • Car parking (40 car spaces)
  • Retail space that can be let
  • Car parking

Civic square

The new outdoor space will accommodate large scale events for up to 2500 people, as well as offering smaller spaces to sit and relax.

It will become the new public heart of the rapidly changing and revitalised city and regional centre - a “Federation Square or Southern Melbourne”.

Regional Library

The Regional Library will increase service and patronage through:

  • Supporting lifelong learning that will help achieve personal growth and development
  • Being a third place for social engagement where people can meet and interact with others.
  • Being an active participant in the expanding economy
  • Being an ambassador for people and a celebrant of diversity
  • Being a quality hub of and for knowledge

Construction update

Demolition started on 2 July 2012.

Progress is proceeding well. Demolition and bulk excavation (early works package) is expected to be completed by the end of September.

Project history

Over the last few years, Council has been considering its future service needs and requirements in relation to a number of key community assets including:

  • The two city offices
  • The two Libraries
  • The Springvale City Hall

The main drivers for the review are:

  • Council is still operating out of two administration centres 16 years after amalgamation, with all the inherent inefficiencies and additional costs associated with maintaining two offices
  • The Libraries 2015 Strategy demonstrates a clear need to expand and upgrade the community’s library facilities

A new municipal office building, located in the heart of Dandenong on the corner of Walker and Lonsdale streets, is set to be completed in mid-2014.

This project will contribute to the revitalisation of Central Dandenong by attracting new services to the area and offer easy access for the community to a new library, council services and state of-the-art meeting facilities.
