Revitalising Central Dandenong

In 2006 the State Government in conjunction with the City of Greater Dandenong detailed a shared vision to position central Dandenong as the capital city of the south east and a great location for people to live, learn, work and play. The State Government pledged $290 million for the revitalisation  of central Dandenong and is working through VicUrban, the City of Greater Dandenong and the community to deliver it.

Urban Master Plan

In November 2007 the Premier of Victoria John Brumby MP and the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong launched the Revitalising Central Dandenong Urban Master Plan.

The plan details the 15 - 20 year vision for the largest urban renewal project in Victoria since the Melbourne Docklands.  The plan maps a dynamic future for central Dandenong as it seeks to attract more people, jobs and businesses to the city centre.

It is estimated that the revitalisation will help to create up to 5,000 new jobs, 4,000 new homes and to leverage $1 billion in private sector development in the city centre over the next 15 to 20 years.

Metro Village 3175

A new master planned residential community is currently being developed on the former Dandenong Saleyard land with up to 1,000 homes and an anticipated population of 3,000 people expected to reside in the area when completed.

Lonsdale Street Boulevard

Lonsdale Street is to become one of Melbourne’s great boulevards, and once again, the heart of central Dandenong. Construction works are now underway and when complete will see traffic moving more slowly and easily, with safer pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths and a more pleasant street environment. New cycle paths, more trees, improved lighting and integrated public art is also planned.

George Street Bridge

A new gateway into central Dandenong, the bridge will link central Dandenong, the greater metropolitan region, the south-east region and Melbourne CBD.

The bridge design has been developed with optimum safety and future usage in mind. Features will include two-way, two-lane roads, street lighting, pedestrian paths on both sides and dedicated cycle paths.

Construction by VicRoads has commenced and is due for completion late 2010. For more information visit VicRoads website.

City Walk

VicUrban has acquired land to allow for the creation of new land parcels which will be offered to the private sector for development. City Walk will create a new pedestrian spine providing an easy and direct route linking Dandenong train station with the Drum Theatre, Dandenong Plaza shopping centre, Palm Plaza mall and the Dandenong Market. Design concepts for City Walk are currently being developed and construction of the new Government Services building will commence in 2010.

Dandenong Market

The first stage of a $26M redevelopment of the Dandenong Produce Market has been completed with the opening of the new general merchandise hall in October 2009. Stage two of the redevelopment works to the fresh food hall is due for completion in 2010.

Public Transport

Aligned with the revitalising central Dandenong project, the State Government is currently reviewing the local bus network to ensure that public transport services compliment the aspirations of the urban master plan.

Civic Centre

Council has confirmed its preferred location for a new civic centre and library as the site diagonally opposite the Drum Theatre on Lonsdale Street (in the new City Walk precinct). The business case for the project is currently being refined prior to a final decision being made by Council.

Dandenong Park

Council adopted the Dandenong Park Precinct Master Plan in 2007. The plan includes a 10 year staged implementation program which could see up to $5 million allocated towards improving the city's showcase public park.

The first stage of the project includes the development of a new Riverside Park at the old drill hall site.

Private Development

In 2009 the Deal Corporation completed and opened a $45 million redevelopment project on the old Arkana site. The mixed use eight-level development will incorporate retail, office and accommodation facilities, and is expected to open in 2009.  Other private development proposals currently being considered include a sixteen-level development on the site of the Old Dandenong Inn and an eight-level development in Scott Street.

Revitalising Central Dandenong projects

An ambitious program of highly visible projects in central Dandenong which aims to show that Dandenong is on the move is currently underway.  As part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, the program aims to make Dandenong a more colourful, clean, safe and enjoyable city.
