Revitalising Central Dandenong

Dandenong is the heart of Melbourne’s growing south east corridor. The State Government’s $290 million funded Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is rejuvenating the city centre and creating a fresh new future for central Dandenong.

The Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative is being delivered by the Victorian Government, through VicUrban, in partnership with the City of Greater Dandenong

Urban Master Plan

In November 2007 the Premier of Victoria John Brumby MP and the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong launched the Revitalising Central Dandenong Urban Master Plan.

The plan details the 15 - 20 year vision for the largest urban renewal project in Victoria since the Melbourne Docklands.  The plan maps a dynamic future for central Dandenong as it seeks to attract more people, jobs and businesses to the city centre.

It is estimated that the revitalisation will help to create up to 5,000 new jobs, 4,000 new homes and to leverage $1 billion in private sector development in the city centre over the next 15 to 20 years.

Lonsdale Street Boulevard

Lonsdale Street is to become one of Melbourne’s great boulevards, and once again, the heart of central Dandenong.

Construction works will see traffic moving more slowly and easily, with safer pedestrian crossings, wider footpaths and a more pleasant street environment. New cycle paths, more trees, improved lighting and integrated public art is also planned.

George Street Bridge

A new gateway for the south-east region, the bridge will provide an alternative route for vehicles into central Dandenong and reduces congestion on the other main roads. It will also link the main shopping precinct with Metro Village 3175.

The bridge will feature a two-way road for drivers and a shared bicycle and pedestrian path on the station side. There will also be an additional pedestrian path on the other side. The bridge will also feature artwork that reflects the history of the local area, as well as street lighting.

Construction by VicRoads has commenced and is due for completion late 2010.

City Street

City Street will be a green, pedestrian and cyclist friendly street that better connects the Station to the city centre.

City Street will create a new pedestrian spine providing a easy and direct route linking Dandenong train station with the Drum Theatre, Dandenong Plaza shopping centre, Palm Plaza mall and the Dandenong Market.

Dandenong Market

The redevelopment of the Dandenong Market will include the creation of a new entry plaza, public toilets, fresh food hall and general merchandising building.  This project will renew the ageing facility and ensure the market’s long-term future.

Public Transport

Aligned with the revitalising central Dandenong project, the State Government is currently reviewing the local bus network to ensure that public transport services compliment the aspirations of the urban master plan.

Civic Centre

Council has confirmed its preferred location for a new civic centre and library as the site diagonally opposite the Drum Theatre on Lonsdale Street (in the new City Walk precinct). The business case for the project is currently being refined prior to a final decision being made by Council.

Dandenong Park

Council adopted the Dandenong Park Precinct Master Plan in 2007. The plan includes a 10 year staged implementation program which to improve the city's showcase public park.

The first stage of the project includes the development of a new Riverside Park at the old drill hall site.

Revitalising Central Dandenong projects

An ambitious program of highly visible projects in central Dandenong which aims to show that Dandenong is on the move is currently underway.  As part of the Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, the program aims to make Dandenong a more colourful, clean, safe and enjoyable city.
