Road Management Plan

The purpose of the Road Management Plan is to establish procedures and systems for the management of public roads.

Council is a road authority under the Road Management Act. As such, it is responsible for carrying out the management functions on local roads i.e. all roads within the municipal area of the City of Greater Dandenong, other than EastLink and main roads such as VicRoads arterials and freeways.

Under the Act, a road authority shall carry out its road management functions based on policy and operational objectives. The Act requires Council to set appropriate standards for the discharge of its road management duties based on available resources. It also requires Council to monitor its performance in delivering the functions.

The plan sets out the policies, objectives and relevant standards in relation to the discharge of the City of Greater Dandenong’s road management duties. The draft plan also includes details of the management system that Council intends to implement to inspect; maintain and repair public roads and ancillary areas for which it is the coordinating road authority or the responsible road authority.

The plan also specifies priorities adopted by Council after due consideration of available resources. It also includes any matters that a relevant Code of Practice specifies should be included in a road management plan.

Road Management Plan Review

Under the Road Management (General) Regulations 2016 Council must conduct a review of its Road Management Plan. Section 125(1)(b) of the Local Government Act 1989 requires each municipal council to prepare a Council Plan within the period of 6 months after each general election or by the next 30 June.

The review for the Road Management Plan has now been completed and endorsed by Council on the 13 June 2017. The review is now available for public inspection. Click here to read Council Minutes (page 35 on wards) and the review.

Council plans to amend its current Road Management Plan once the official processes have been completed. At that time Council will invite the community to provide feedback on the new Plan.
