Community Soccer Festival
06 June 2018
Celebrate the Greater Dandenong community and the world game in Harmony Square with a festival of soccer on Saturday 16 June.
Show your support for the Team 11 bid to bring the A-League and W-League to Greater Dandenong and watch as local soccer teams put on a show across the day. Then settle in to watch the big screen as we live broadcast the Socceroos vs France World Cup game from 8pm.
Council is inviting the community to cheer on local boys’ and girls’ Under 15 soccer teams as they compete in tournaments from 12pm. Then stick around as eight teams representing organisations including the City of Greater Dandenong, Monash Health, Victoria Police, the CFA and Street Soccer compete for the Community Cup.
An exhibition match will help close the festival and launch a new health and fitness initiative encouraging men to play soccer. Big Bros Sport is behind the Man vs Fat Football League which encourages men to hit the soccer pitch to improve their health.
Cr Jim Memeti, who is a keen supporter of the Team 11 bid, said soccer was a world game that broke down barriers.
“Greater Dandenong is a sports loving community, and football (soccer) is one of the most popular sports played locally,” Mr Memeti said.
“In fact the beauty of football is that anyone can play it. It truly is a world game that can help bring our community together.
“With the Team 11 bid our ultimate aim is to become Australia’s football heartland and we are working really hard to make this a reality. This festival will be a great opportunity to see players engage in some fun and friendly competition, before we cheer on the Socceroos in their World Cup campaign.”
Greater Dandenong has joined together with the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire to help bring a national franchise to Melbourne’s south east.
