Waste and Recycling

Household Garbage Collection Service

City of Greater Dandenong provides a weekly household garbage collection service. This is available to all residential households within the municipality.

Council is committed to reducing the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill.

A large percentage of waste thrown in the garbage bin can be composted, recycled, or even reused.

By making less rubbish in the first place, by recycling and composting more, the better it will be for our environment now and in the future.

Find out more about Council's kerbside collection services and other waste disposal options.

About your garbage bin and collection

The bin with the red lid is for household rubbish and is collected weekly, on the same day each week.

The day your garbage is collected depends on where you live. To find out what day your garbage is collected:

The standard bin size is 120 litres (930mm high x 480mm wide).

Residents may choose to downsize their garbage bin to 80 litres.

If you change your bin option, your annual garbage levy will be adjusted to the new option charge. For more information visit the waste services options and charges page.

Putting out your bins

Bins should be put out the night before collection day. They should be placed out on the nature strip:

  • parallel to the kerb with the lid opening onto the road
  • away from overhead trees
  • away from power poles or street signs
  • away from parked cars
  • spaced at least 300mm away from other bins
Garbage bin correct placement

Missed garbage collection

There are a number of reasons why a bin may not have been emptied:

  1. Bin not placed out in time for collection
  2. Bin was placed out on the wrong night or wrong week
  3. Bin was contaminated
  4. Bin was too heavy or contained inappropriate materials
  5. Bin was not easily accessible
  6. Bin was not placed on street correctly

If a bin is not emptied because of points 3 to 6, a sticker will be placed on the bin so the resident knows.

What if we missed emptying your bin?

If your bin was placed out correctly and has not been emptied by 4pm on the scheduled collection day, please do the following:

  1. Leave the bin out on the naturestrip to be emptied.

  2. Contact council’s Customer Service to report the missed collection on 8571 1000.

When responding to a missed bin report council’s collections contractor will normally return to your property on the same day or the next business day. If missed on a Friday and reported that day, our collections contractor will endeavour to return to the property on a Saturday morning. When reporting the missed collection to council you will be advised of the revised collection day.
