[SUB]URBAN STUDIO is a two-year creative arts project that will offer exciting new arts opportunities in Greater Dandenong.

Residents have an opportunity to participate in workshops and performances to explore the mediums dance, puppetry and spoken word.

[SUB]URBAN STUDIO is funded by the City of Greater Dandenong and Creative Victoria as part of the Creative Suburbs program.

What is contemporary dance?

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.

Chunky Move is Victoria’s premier contemporary dance company that has toured globally that everyone can dance to.

What is puppetry?

Puppetry is a form of theatre/performance that involves the manipulation of puppets–inanimate objects, often resembling some type of human or animal figure that are animated or manipulated by a human called a puppeteer.

"Puppetry is poetic and suggestive and expresses ideas that people cannot always say" - Black Hole Theatre's Artistic Director, Nancy Black.


What is spoken word?

Spoken word is a style of entertainment involving performance-based poetry that primarily focuses on the aesthetics of word play and story-telling. It can often include collaboration and experimentation with other art forms such as music, theatre, rap and dance.

"Spoken word is an avenue of expression – a free form version of poetry – that enables the performer to be traditional (i.e. Shakespeare) or contemporary (i.e. hip hop) in style" - Spoken Word Artist, Abdul Hammoud.

Participate and get involved in a range of workshops, performances, exhibitions and events.

All dance, puppetry and spoken word workshops are free and open to all members of the community.

All classes will provide a safe, social and most importantly fun environment
