Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art Redevelopment

The Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art is an exciting new initiative celebrating art and culture in Greater Dandenong.

Refurbishments and extensions will create the Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art – a new centre with facilities for Australian touring art exhibitions, curation space for emerging and professional artists, and community spaces for creative activities and community gatherings.

As the Masonic Hall is a significant heritage building, designs for the Gallery of Art respect the importance of the Masonic Hall while introducing a contemporary art space.

The Gallery of Art will consolidate central Dandenong’s growing reputation for arts participation and expression, and will allow for a significant expansion of the Walker Street Gallery’s visual arts programs, building on its current 16,000 annual visitors.

The gallery will include:

  • State-of-the-art exhibition spaces for touring and local artists
  • Community, creative and workshop spaces
  • Future café opportunities
  • Active outdoor spaces along Halpin Way and Mason Street
  • New and engaging public art

  • Mid 2021 – Construction anticipated to be completed

Construction:

The City of Greater Dandenong have appointed Harris HMC as building contractors to deliver the new Greater Dandenong Gallery of Art. Formed in 1984, Harris HMC is a Melbourne based, family owned and operated construction company with extensive experience in both delivering quality contemporary buildings and completing sensitive heritage refurbishments.

The tender specifications have also required the successful contractor to use a quota of local suppliers and employees throughout the build process, further supporting Council’s commitment to driving economic growth in our city.
