Words of Wisdom Online Exhibition (watch anytime on YouTube)
We invite you to come on a journey to explore items that are legacies of past lives that are rarely on public display. ‘Words of Wisdom’ Exhibition Curator’s Talk.
Words have the power to inspire, excite, amuse, share knowledge or to express grief, loss and fear. A single word for example: Hope, Peace or even the word Infinity scrawled on a wall causes us to reflect on our own lives and experiences. Understanding our own identity resides in the ongoing generational transfer of stories and knowledge in both the spoken and written form. This presentation will explore the narratives of life as told and recorded through the printed word.
The ‘Words of Wisdom’ exhibition acknowledges the many cultural traditions of sharing wisdom. This accompanying presentation will feature exhibition items from the City of Greater Dandenong Civic and Cultural Heritage Collection, Dandenong and District and Springvale and District historical society collections as well as private collections. These items range from historical books that record European settler experiences, children’s story books of imaginative worlds and the austere early Victorian education systems of learning the 3R’s. This presentation allows us to reflect on personal journeys through letters, epitaphs and scrapbooks as well as being able to view a formal Certificate of Governance that formalises the right to govern our City.
