Volunteering

Volunteering makes a positive difference in Greater Dandenong – all while having fun, making friends, learning new skills and gaining a sense of achievement. Volunteering with the City of Greater Dandenong provides you with an opportunity to share your time, talents and abilities in a supported and professional environment.

By joining our volunteer team, you can learn new skills and expand your circle of friends while making a valuable contribution to the community.

Council has a host of interesting volunteer roles available including reading buddies, Meals on Wheels deliveries, assisting at festivals and events and much more. 

There is something of interest for everyone, and you can volunteer a little or a lot.

How to become a volunteer

Please note to become a volunteer with Council you will also be required to complete a number of legal requirements.

The Volunteer Program will provide you with all the links and instructions.  

These requirements are:

  • Police and Working with Children Checks
  • Completion of Council’s Child Safe Standards Online Training
  • Volunteer Application and Volunteer Agreement forms

Greater Dandenong Volunteer Resource Service (GDVRS)

The Greater Dandenong Volunteer Resource Service (GDVRS) established in 2015, is a joint initiative between the City of Greater Dandenong and South East Volunteers. South East Volunteers have been supporting communities since 1985 and each year more than 1800 volunteers are placed in over 450 community service organisations.

Operating five days per week, GDVRS offers numerous services including:

  • Connecting locals with volunteering opportunities
  • Helping community organisations to recruit volunteers
  • Providing regular training sessions for volunteers
  • Providing information, training, support and resources to Volunteer Managers and Coordinators.

GDVRS offers the option of face-to-face, online or telephone interviews, in line with current COVID restrictions. Training for volunteers will be face-to-face and online, and Manager’s training will be online.

Supporting the needs of children and families within the municipality is imperative. Volunteering at a local play group can provide so much enjoyment.

Community Festivals and Events

Be part of the fun and excitement of Council’s festivals and events by becoming a Council Ambassador. Ambassadors provide a warm welcome, information and conduct simple surveys at public events.

Support our Elderly Residents

Volunteers help make the life of our elderly residents more comfortable in a number of ways including delivering meals (see the Food Services (Meals on Wheels) tab above for roles), having a chat or assisting with events at our Planned Activity Programs, delivering library books and more.

English Tutor

Assist and encourage participants, who are newly arrived in Australia, to practice and learn basic English in order to enhance their skills and opportunities.

Volunteering for administration and office support jobs may help in gaining a future career in secretarial or receptionist positions or you may already have this experience to support this position within our community.

Interested in Dandenong’s History?

Cultural Heritage Volunteers

Be part of the history of Greater Dandenong.  Work with artworks and heritage items from the City of Greater Dandenong collection. The City of Greater Dandenong is seeking Digitisation Volunteers to work with the Heritage team to scan documents, prints, paintings, and objects, which are significant to the Greater Dandenong for display online.  Volunteers will work with a small team to learn new skills for digital archiving, scanning, and photography.

Are you interested in becoming a Garden Guide? Council is seeking volunteers who love gardens and would like to teach other residents all about gardening. Guides will receive specialised garden guide training.
